Have you dreamed of starting your own salon? Does owning your own business and being your own boss appeal to you? If so, there are some important things to consider before starting out on your own. The beauty industry is an industry that has grown even during economic hard times and is projected to continue on that growth track for many years. Even with all the growth seen in the beauty industry, it is important to keep in mind this is an industry full of competition, so it is important to have a good plan and stay focused on your goal.

Here are some things to consider before you jump into starting your own salon:

1.  Know your stuff

Don’t think the second you graduate from beauty school you are ready to jump into the field. Spend some time working in a reputable salon and building your knowledge of the industry. You will learn a good deal when you are actually working in the field. It will also give you a chance to build your clientele.

2. Consider a franchise

If your finances are in order it might be worth looking into starting a franchise. This may make things easier for you as the name will already be well established.  You may not have the same creative freedom for your salon set up, but you will be able to get things such as equipment, materials you need, and accessories at a discount.

3. Decide what services you want to provide

You need to consider what services you want your salon to provide. If you are just starting out and it will be just you, don’t spread yourself too thin. You may want to limit the number of services you provide and add services as you can increase your staff and clientele.

4. Materials for Services

You will want to make sure you have up to date equipment, good lighting, garments for your clients to wear when receiving services, and more depending on the services you provide. Make sure you have a warranty or guarantee of the equipment that you purchase.

5. Interior

Decide on the feel you want your salon to convey and order furniture after you have decided. Typically when a client is receiving  services they want to feel pampered. It is a good idea to find comfortable chairs and create a calming atmosphere.

6. Savvy Software

You will need to have a software program that will allow you run your back office without a lot of confusion and is affordable.  Don’t overpay for software that is confusing and has tools that you will never use.

With a lot of planning, hard work and patience you can reach your goal of owning a salon.  Make sure you take the time to research what you need to run your business efficiently and have a place that will draw in the customers and keep them coming back.
